BACKGROUND:
About the Walnut Community
The Walnut Recreation Center is a local community center that serves the surrounding area by offering various recreational programs and services.
The neighborhoods surrounding the Walnut Recreation Center are typically residential with a mix of single-family homes, apartments, and townhouses. This area is in the western part of Las Vegas, with easy access to major roads and public transit routes. The residents living nearby are often a diverse mix of families, working professionals, and retirees with a range of incomes and backgrounds. The Walnut area is also near various schools, shopping centers, and parks, contributing to its family-friendly atmosphere. In terms of demographics, the neighborhood is home to a wide range of ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, with the majority of Latin American and African American households. The area is known for being more affordable, compared to some of the city’s upscale neighborhoods, making it attractive to individuals and families who want to live close to the amenities of Las Vegas without paying high prices. Additionally, the community center is a soft focal point for local events, helping foster a sense of unity among residents. The people who live nearby may range from long-term Las Vegas locals to newcomers.
About the Walnut Recreation Center
For more than 10 years, the WRC has been the only CC recreation/resource facility in the lower north-east area of Las Vegas. It started in 1998 as a 3-wide trailer named the Walnut-Cecile Community Center. The community center offered free outreach recreation to more than 1000 kids from surrounding neighborhoods, as well as provided recreation to approximately 100 kids at the trailer site daily. We used Clark County vans to offer outreach recreation to the neighborhood, children, and surrounding apartment complexes in these areas. The recreation need was tremendous, and our outreach program was very successful as a result. In 2002, Clark County invested over $10 million using community development block grant funding to build a 41,000 square-foot full-service recreation center for this and surrounding communities.
The present Walnut Recreation Center offers a variety of free and paid programs and services. In the past 10 years, Walnut has grown to accommodate the 89115 community, a portion of North Las Vegas, and Ellis Air Force Base.
Walnut's next level is to develop a “community campus” that meets all of the needs, recreation, and resources in the northeast area. By assessing and fulfilling the needs of this community, this feat can be accomplished. The future of Walnut is bright.
GOALS:
- The mural is to represent the culturally diverse Walnut Community.
- The mural should be inspirational to the children who engage the playground with stylized, bold color and design choices.
Description of the designated area for the artwork:
The placement of the mural will be visible from the children’s playground; the wall is adjacent to the main entrance of the Walnut Center. The mural will be painted on a wall made of square cinder blocks, measuring 26’ H x 36’ W. The wall requires preparation before the painting starts. For County-approved materials, such as primer and other details, see Design/Presentation Agreement – Exhibit B.

PROCESS:
This project will be divided into two phases.
Phase 1: An independent outside evaluation panel will select up to three (3) finalists who will be required to submit a design proposal. Details and guidelines will be found in the Artwork Design Development and Project General Conditions
Phase 2: The finalist will be contracted to create the final mural.
PROJECT BUDGET: $15,600
MILESTONES:
- Milestone 1 – Upon completion of the pre-project meeting with Clark County staff and completion and approval of the project brief and design, the artist will be paid 50%.
- Milestone 2 – Upon County’s inspection of the completed artwork and verification that the artwork meets the technical specifications for the project, site clean-up has been conducted and punch list items resolved, the artist will be paid 25%.
- Milestone 3 – Upon completion of the application of anti-graffiti product, submittal of all required paperwork and images, the plaque has been installed, and the removal of all equipment with a final walkthrough with County staff, the artist will be paid the remaining 25%.

Announcing our newest open call for art, Plantasia!
We’re excited to share a call for art, especially made for plant lovers! This exhibition draws inspiration from its eponym, Mother Earth’s Plantasia by Mort Garson. People have been fascinated by plants throughout the ages and have caused multiple plant crazes; the most recent one came from the COVID lockdowns of 2020. Plants are extensions of our environment, and many of us use them to keep our homes lively. Plants can be grown from seeds or other types of propagation too, but when life ends, they can also be composted to support new growth. Plants are integral to our world, but really, life in general and requires devotion and care. We ask artists to think about what it means to keep plants in pots or to create manicured gardens within boundaries. How do we view plants compared to other living beings? Plants are beautiful and we expect to see a lot of beautiful work done for this exhibition.

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
The Clark County Museum seeks ten (10) professional artists or art teams to create visual media for an exhibition at the Clark County Museum’s main campus at 1830 South Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV, 89002. Items remain on display from August 1, 2025, through October 24, 2025. Each successful applicant will receive one thousand dollars ($1000) to build and exhibit their original piece. The artwork must fit within a standard door (80 x 36) and reside in an indoor 600-square-foot gallery. BACKGROUND:
The Clark County Museum is a 30-acre site complete with an exhibit hall and a collection of historic buildings. EXHIBIT THEME:
Beginning in 2025, organizations across Nevada will mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with special events and exhibitions. Clark County Museum’s contribution to the America 250 commemoration, Visions of the Past: Artistic Reflections on 250 Years of America and Nevada, takes thirty artifacts from the museum’s collection and uses them as artistic inspiration for new artistic works that illustrate the unique history of Southern Nevada. The objects document ten different historical topics, with each category having at least three different artifacts. Artists will make use of any or all objects from within a single category as source material for their new pieces. For example, an artist may pick the topic of Commercial Aviation, which includes Howard Hughes’ watch, an airplane door, and a LAS airport gaming token. The commissioned art may allude to just one item, a combination of two, or all three. A panel of three members of the valley’s public history community will evaluate the submissions.
The artifacts will be on display in the depot. Artist can reach out to the Museum to schedule a private viewing of the collection. The Clark County Museum is free and open seven days a week from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
