We are pleased to announce a call for art for our newest exhibition, Juneteenth: Some Red, Some Not, a group-juried art exhibition at the Pearson Community Center Gallery. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and celebrates the legacies of those who fought for freedom and those who continue to fight against racial injustice. Juneteenth is celebrated each year through parades, family reunions, and barbecues. An assortment of food- some red, some not- is shared for these celebrations, including greens, black-eyed peas, grilled meats, and red-hued foods such as watermelon, red velvet cake, and red punch.
In many West African cultures, the color red symbolizes strength, spirituality, and life and death. Red foods and drinks have been a major way of commemorating the legacy of resilience. The importance of red foods and non-red foods can be traced back to the continent of Africa. The exhibition seeks to explore food as a part of culture and family traditions, and to celebrate the culinary history of the African diaspora. The exhibition will be juried by Tameka Henry.

We are excited to announce our newest open call for art, With the Land. This open call requests a reflective exploration of the relationship between people and the land that we inhabit. Landscape paintings are one of the classical practices of Western art and have been used to sell the promises of “unsettled” land; a call to adventure and conquest. How can we depict land differently in our time? What does our relationship look like with the “natural world” and how does that challenge our understanding of humanity? We invite artists to reflect upon and begin a dialogue with the environment. How can we live With the Land?
Our juror for this exhibition is Kim Garrison Means. Since 2003, she has used her visual arts skillset to highlight the wonders of the Southern Nevada landscape, as an artist, illustrator, public lands advocate, and one-half of the conceptual art team United Catalysts. In 2021, Kim became the Searchlight area representative for the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument campaign and co-curated the Spirit of the Land exhibition at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. Through community engagement and creative events, she and many others helped the monument proposal gain strong support, and it was designated in March 2023. In 2024, Kim received the Marjorie Stone Douglas Citizen Conservationist of the Year award from the National Parks Conservation Association for her arts and community work in helping to protect Avi Kwa Ame. Kim is currently the director of the Mystery Ranch Arts and Ecology Research Station, which allows scientists, artists, writers, and historians to study the area and share stories about the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument landscape. Kim also works as a college art instructor, an arts and communications consultant for local and national conservation organizations, and is co-editor of the local ecology, culture, and history journal, the Searchlight Gold Beam.

The Clark County Public Arts Office is excited to invite you to apply to their newest open call, Pink. This color was named after the flower, Dianthus plumarius, commonly known as a garden pink in 1566. Before that, it was a verb in a similar meaning to the word “wink” or “blink.” It has been associated with both young masculinity and femininity while also carrying the meanings of bravery, courage, resistance, violence, and power throughout its historically genderless existence. Pink comes in different shades, hues, and intensities. We invite artists to explore the weight that this color carries. Artworks, of any medium, should be predominantly pink in all its different iterations.
The exhibition will be juried by Lolita Develay, a painter and artist based in Las Vegas, Nevada, originally from Pearblossom, California. Develay is a painter and artist whose chromatic paintings are integrated with statements on access and social values. Develay's work embodies a dynamic blend of geographical influences, cultural intersections, and social consciousness. With themes of beauty, sexuality, race, and spirituality, Develay's work serves as a mirror to the complex state of American life. She received her MFA in Painting from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2014.

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
Clark County Parks and Recreation Department’s Public Arts Office is seeking an intermediate-level public artist or team to create an outdoor mural at the Walnut Recreation Center, 3075 North Walnut Rd, Las Vegas, NV, 89115. This project is open only to artists over the age of 18 who are not part-time or full-time Clark County employees or currently under contract for any Clark County Public Arts project larger than $50,000 and have experience creating outdoor murals in the southwest environment.
The contracted artist will be required to provide their Social Security number or Federal Tax ID Number and may be asked to have a current State and County business license.
If applying as a team, the project lead will serve as the sole contractor with Clark County. It is mandatory for the lead artist to identify all other team members as subcontractors. The contracted artist(s) will be required to obtain necessary insurances, licenses, and certificates, including workmen's compensation insurance, a Clark County business license, and an OSHA Scissor Lift Certification.
BACKGROUND:
About the Walnut Community
The Walnut Recreation Center is a local community center that serves the surrounding area by offering various recreational programs and services.
The neighborhoods surrounding the Walnut Recreation Center are typically residential with a mix of single-family homes, apartments, and townhouses. This area is in the western part of Las Vegas, with easy access to major roads and public transit routes. The residents living nearby are often a diverse mix of families, working professionals, and retirees with a range of incomes and backgrounds. The Walnut area is also near various schools, shopping centers, and parks, contributing to its family-friendly atmosphere. In terms of demographics, the neighborhood is home to a wide range of ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, with the majority of Latin American and African American households. The area is known for being more affordable, compared to some of the city’s upscale neighborhoods, making it attractive to individuals and families who want to live close to the amenities of Las Vegas without paying high prices. Additionally, the community center is a soft focal point for local events, helping foster a sense of unity among residents. The people who live nearby may range from long-term Las Vegas locals to newcomers.
About the Walnut Recreation Center
For more than 10 years, the WRC has been the only CC recreation/resource facility in the lower north-east area of Las Vegas. It started in 1998 as a 3-wide trailer named the Walnut-Cecile Community Center. The community center offered free outreach recreation to more than 1000 kids from surrounding neighborhoods, as well as provided recreation to approximately 100 kids at the trailer site daily. We used Clark County vans to offer outreach recreation to the neighborhood, children, and surrounding apartment complexes in these areas. The recreation need was tremendous, and our outreach program was very successful as a result. In 2002, Clark County invested over $10 million using community development block grant funding to build a 41,000 square-foot full-service recreation center for this and surrounding communities.
The present Walnut Recreation Center offers a variety of free and paid programs and services. In the past 10 years, Walnut has grown to accommodate the 89115 community, a portion of North Las Vegas, and Ellis Air Force Base.
Walnut's next level is to develop a “community campus” that meets all of the needs, recreation, and resources in the northeast area. By assessing and fulfilling the needs of this community, this feat can be accomplished. The future of Walnut is bright.
GOALS:
- The mural is to represent the culturally diverse Walnut Community.
- The mural should be inspirational to the children who engage the playground with stylized, bold color and design choices.
Description of the designated area for the artwork:
The placement of the mural will be visible from the children’s playground; the wall is adjacent to the main entrance of the Walnut Center. The mural will be painted on a wall made of square cinder blocks, measuring 26’ H x 36’ W. The wall requires preparation before the painting starts. For County-approved materials, such as primer and other details, see Design/Presentation Agreement – Exhibit B.

PROCESS:
This project will be divided into two phases.
Phase 1: An independent outside evaluation panel will select up to three (3) finalists who will be required to submit a design proposal. Details and guidelines will be found in the Artwork Design Development and Project General Conditions
Phase 2: The finalist will be contracted to create the final mural.
PROJECT BUDGET: $15,600
MILESTONES:
